The aperture shutter is a small piece of plastic which covers the access aperture. When the cartridge is placed within a |drive|, the drive pushes the shutter to one side while it accesses the |recording disk| within it. When the cartridge is removed from the drive, a spring pushes the shutter over the aperture again to protect the recording disk.
